Our Mission
At REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.), we are passionate about the outdoors and believe a life outside is a life well lived. It all began in 1938 when a group of mountaineers wanted to make it easier to get quality gear. We are now the nation’s largest consumer cooperative and dedicated to outfitting our members and community for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship.
Our passion for the outdoors is evident in all aspects of our business. You can see it in the way we operate, our stores, on our digital properties, and in the community. Each year, REI donates millions of dollars to support conservation efforts nationwide and sends dedicated teams of volunteers consisting of members, customers and REI employees to build trails, clean up beaches, restore local habitats and more.
Helping millions of members and customers to get outside and outfitted comes with some interesting technical problems. We build a lot of systems in support of this and leverage many open source technologies and technical communities to help us on this path. Being consumers of that community we want to do our part to give back. This site is our way of doing that and is where we share our stories and some of our software that we have found to help our journey. We’ll share about our culture, processes, methodologies, tools, and progress. Our goal is to be transparent and open in hopes that it encourages and helps foster the technical community at large.
